11-year-old British girl fatally shot in family garden

France: An 11-year-old British girl has tragically lost her life after being shot while playing in the garden of her family home in Saint Herbot, a village in Brittany, western France.

The devastating incident occurred on Saturday evening, following a long-standing dispute between neighbors over land ownership.

According to the local prosecutor and a town hall official, the girl's family was enjoying a warm evening when a 71-year-old Dutch neighbor opened fire multiple times at them.

The parents sustained injuries, with the father critically wounded, while their eight-year-old daughter escaped physical harm but was left in a state of shock.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Dutch pensioner suddenly appeared armed with a firearm, fired shots at the victims, and subsequently retreated to his residence with his wife.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the families had been involved in a protracted conflict concerning a plot of land adjacent to their properties.

The Dutchman eventually surrendered after a police negotiator persuaded him to leave his home.

The seriousness of the incident has led to the case being transferred to the public prosecutor in Brest.

British Foreign Office has confirmed that consular assistance is being provided to the affected British family.

Regine Guillot, the secretary of the nearest town hall, revealed that the British family had been living in the hamlet for five years while describing the Dutch neighbor as a private individual.

The village community is in a state of shock, as the shooting has brought an unprecedented tragedy to their tranquil surroundings.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another shocking attack in the French Alps, where a British toddler and six others were stabbed.

The authorities continue to investigate both cases, seeking justice for the victims and their families.
